It is officially summertime! The kids are out of school, temperatures are starting to heat up, and it’s time to start laying out by the pool once again. June also happens to be the official month of the rose. In honor of this beautiful flower we have decided to feature two rose wines that represent opposite ends of the rose spectrum while being complementary to seasonal fare. Don’t worry though, if Rose isn’t your thing, we have also included a light bodied Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

Crios de Susana Balbo Rose of Malbec 2008 – $14.38

In a world that is pretty much dominated by men, Susana Balbo has made quite a name for herself in the Argentinean wine industry, not to mention, the world market. This rose is produced from Malbec grapes that are harvested from 30 year old ungrafted vines, providing consistency and concentration. In the glass, the wine is absolutely beautiful, displaying a vibrant rosy hue and medium body. The nose is alive with wonderful hints of fresh strawberries and cherries, while the palate is very concentrated with lots of spicy red fruits and excellent balance. Partake with light snacks and cheeses (can you say picnic wine?)

Chateau Marouine Rose 2005 – $16.19

This rose is one of the products of the famed rose region of Provence in the Southeast of France, maybe you’ve heard of it!? A true French rose, the Marouine has the wonderful complexion of a ripe peach’s skin and is bursting with aromas of watermelon, cherries and even a little bit of green apple. The wine begins very dry as many French roses do, but soon opens up with fantastic notes of melon, red berries and balanced earthiness. Very light in body, this would be a good accompaniment to fresh fruit or enjoyed alone as an aperitif.

Rodney Strong Chalk Hill Chardonnay 2007 – $19.05

Rodney Strong was the first winery to designate a specific varietal from the northern Sonoma appellation of Chalk Hill, which gets its name from the white, volcanic ash soil. This unique vineyard allows for the production of very non-characteristic California Chardonnay. Aging in new and seasoned French oak on the “lees” provides for a creamy mouthfeel that is complemented by balanced acidity and minerality. Flavors of buttercream and toast intermingle with hints of pineapple and pear in one of the more intriguing chardonnays that we have had in a while. Enjoy with a seafood pasta béchamel.

Hayman & Hill Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir 2005 – $19.79

When they aren’t working with their other wine project Blackstone, Dennis Hill and David Hayman pour their time and efforts into their namesake label of Hayman & Hill. The vineyard is located on the eastern slopes of the Santa Lucia Range in Monterrey County. This 100% Pinot Noir displays a deep, translucent garnet in the glass and emits aromas of plum, raspberry, bourbon spice and sage. Light to medium body with fine, polished tannins, this is the perfect red wine for the summer heat. Flavors of cherry pie and red fruit come together nicely with a tart, dry finish. Pair with citrus roasted salmon and brown rice.
